Description
Colorized photo from 1939 May 27
Original Title: World's Fair, Railroad pageant, Final Curtain
Location: Flushing Meadows, NY
This is from the 1939 Worlds Fair in NY. They used trains to explain the history of progress, but also used them as a sort of closed curtain effect.
I liked this image because it had a sort of Surreal Retro look. The format of people sitting here, you would expect to see a dolphin shows, and not full sized locomotives (of which there were 20 of them). With 4 shows a day, 250 people in full costume running about, sitting on old bikes, driving cars, carriages, all kinds of crazy train contraptions. The show ran for about 30min or so. They would run in front of the trains and ride it. How no one was hit is not known.
The original had a lot of hair line scratches on it, and more hidden in the shadows. It became annoying to fix.
Most of the colors came from color films I found on youtube of this event. With them I found many costumes, some of the trains, and the stand colors. I was hoping that round train would have a stripe of red. Nope, all black with chrome stripes.
The lady in the dead center was the Woman of the Future. Dressed in dark colors with a strange white sash, and a weirder fan like thing on her head. She represents something, they didn't say what or when.
