Description
A new Marine F4U-1A Corsair of VMF-441 'Black Jacks' touches down on its base on Roi island on the northern tip of the Kwajalein Atoll (Marshalls) in March 1944 shortly after the squadron's conversion from the Grumman F4F Wildcat. The 4th Marine Division had driven enemy forces from the island a few weeks earlier in a series of hard-fought battles. At this time VMF-441 as part of Marine Air Group 31 was engaged in strikes against Japanese forces on Wotje and Maloelap Atolls.
Fighter Squadron 441 was formed in October 1942 from a cadre of officers and men split off from VMF-111, and served with distinction in the central Pacific through the end of the war. Their final tally was 49 Japanese aircraft destroyed in aerial combat.
