According to Marian Wenzel the tombstones were elevated by the medieval Vlachs. In Herzegovina the Vlachs were named Caravlachs by Turks (in Turkish, cara means black and black is the North in Turkish geography) and Caravlachs means Northern Vlachs. Italians translated Caravlachs into Maurovlachs and finally Morlachs. Vlachs lived in all Herzegovina and in Dalmatia.

Artist's Description

Extracted from Wikipedia: "The Stećci (singular: Stećak), are monumental medieval tombstones. Appearing in the 11th century, the stećci reached their peak in the late 14th to 15th centuries, before dying away during the Ottoman occupation. Symbols of the tombstones indicate Gothic-Celtic origin. The word itself is a contracted form of the older word stojećak, which is derived from the verb stajati (v. stand). It literally means "the standing thing".

All these years I have been a free lancer. Photography has been...
